My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks

My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks

Written and Illustrated by Hanoch Piven

A little girl was asked by her teacher to draw a picture of her family.  After taking a close look at her picture, the little girl decides that the picture does not do justice to her family.  She is just not satisfied that it tells the WHOLE story about them.  She goes one to describe her family using objects.  My brother is as sneaky as a snake. My dog is as smelly as dirty socks! Not only does she does she use objects to describe her family; she also uses the objects to visualize her family.  Kids LOVE this book and can’t wait to see how she is going to describe the next family member.  THEN, they start describing THEIR family members!

Ideas and Activities:

This is a wonderful book to teach similes.  By the end of the story, the students are creating their own similes and do not even realize it!  It is also a good book to discuss differences.

At the end of our lesson, I usually have the class come up with a simile for their teacher.  When their teacher arrives, they usually start giggling first and then tell their teacher their simile.  Example:  Mr. _____ is as silly as a monkey scratching his armpit.  Usually the teacher catches on and creates a simile to describe the class.
